Now here’s a very special tasting event that has literally never happened before! We have persuaded Peter Finlayson, the winemaker of Bouchard Finlayson (one of South Africa’s great wineries), to come over to show us a vertical tasting of his personal favourite of all the wines he has made over the years: Galpin Peak Pinot Noir. Peter’s aim is to highlight the aging potential of Hemel en Aarde Galpin Peak Pinot Noir over 13 years, and to this end we will be seeing no less than seven vintages of this iconic wine: 2004, 2005 (from magnum), 2008, 2010, 2013, 2015, 2017. These are extremely rare wines that Peter is bringing over from his own private reserve and therefore a real privilege to taste. As a result the only wine for sale on the night will be the current release vintage, 2017.

      Galpin Peak Pinot Noir:

The Pinot Noir grape variety is unique as it displays both a delicacy and richness, but it is often quoted as depicting little varietal character of its own – rather expressing the terroir upon which it is grown. Hence, it carries the crown of being the most terroir-expressive of all grape varieties. The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in South Africa represents that unique combination of soil and climate that exists in only a handful of places where the exact balance provides the perfect expression of this elusive grape. A total of eight vineyards, each with a unique contribution to the wine’s complexity, are picked by hand and cooled overnight, before being destemmed. Following fermentation by certified organic yeasts, each parcel is pressed individually and transferred to French oak barrels. After eleven months maturation, the final blend is assembled in tank and bottled following four months of natural clarification.

This tasting will sell out very fast – be quick to book your places!

For one evening every November, we take over the Ballroom at Oxford’s iconic Randolph Hotel for our annual Wine Fair.

And 2019 is no exception! We’ve chosen an assortment of our favourite producers, covering many famous – and some less well known - regions of the winemaking world. There will be fifteen different producers, with around eighty wines available to taste.

Each table at this walk-around tasting will be dedicated to a specific producer, allowing you to taste through the range of an estate and really understand what their winemaking philosophy is all about. Plus, the accompanying booklet will provide plenty of supplementary information for the wine geeks amongst you!

Your ticket price gets you entry to the fair, and samples of whichever wines take your fancy.

All wines on show will be offered at a discounted price should you wish to take the opportunity to stock up for the festive season. We will also be issuing a £10 voucher to each attendee, redeemable against a twelve bottle purchase.

This is always a fantastically good fun event, and the highlight of our tasting calendar – a pretty good way to spend a Friday night as far as we’re concerned!

Please note that this event sells out quickly, so do book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

SOLD OUT - Masterclass: The Forgotten Wines of Fitou with Winemaker Katie Jones

The Oxford Wine Company Shop, 6 Turl Street, Oxford OX1 3DQ Monday, 18 November 6.45 for 7.00pm £20.00 Presented by Katie Jones - venue TURL STREET

      Book online here: http://www.ff1ll.cn/categories/tasting-tickets

Alternatively call Paris at the Turl Street Shop on 01865 604170 with your payment details, or email tastings@oxfordwine.co.uk.

Please note, there is no need to collect tickets in advance of the event. Simply book your places and turn up on the night!

"We set out to prove that Fitou doesn't have to be supermarket wine,' says Jones. 'The potential for quality wines down here is enormous."

Katie Jones moved from Leicester to the Languedoc in the ‘90s to work for a cooperative and fell in love with the romantic, rugged landscape of this often-overlooked appellation. In 2008 Katie decided that it was time to bite the bullet and buy her first vineyard. She now has vineyards in Maury, Tuchan and Paziols.

There are many remarkable things about Katie Jones. Katie chose to work vineyards that many would turn their noses up at - vineyards that require intense manual labour and electric fencing to keep the wild boar from eating her crop! She has also overcome spiteful vandalism and through stubborn determination and the help of her husband Jean-Marc and many of her fans around the globe, today produces honest wines full of personality that showcase the potential of her terroir and old vines.

On the 18th November we will be tasting six of Katie’s wines; potentially some new vintage releases, most likely something in limited availability and almost definitely one of her favourite wines from her ‘Along Came Jones’ range – Hairy Grenache anyone?

It is a real treat to have Katie as a guest in our Turl Street Tasting Cellar, to hear first-hand about her journey and to taste through a selection from her exceptional portfolio. The low yields of her old (and in some cases ancient!) vines in conjunction with her viticulture and winemaking style mean these wines are available in limited quantity only, so don’t miss this excellent opportunity!

Due to Domaine Jones ever-growing popularity and reputation we expect this event to sell out quickly so please book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Dinner: Pol Roger and Friends at The Old Bank Hotel

We are delighted to be collaborating with Pol Roger this November to put on a dinner in The Gallery at The Old Bank Hotel.

We all know Pol Roger for their delicious Champagne (which, naturally, will be served as an aperitif on arrival), but did you know that they also act as an agency for some seriously high quality producers?

With that in mind, we’ll be pairing some fabulous wines with a specially chosen menu. We’ll begin with bubbles – the Pol Roger Brut Reserve NV (retail price £44.50). The starter will be accompanied by Alsace legends Josmeyer’s Mise de Printemps Pinot Blanc 2018 (retail price . A family-run estate producing highly acclaimed terroir-driven biodynamic wines, the Josmeyer philosophy is ‘the pursuit of excellence in harmony with the earth’

For the main course, we’ll be moving on to a comparison of two white Burgundies from the wonderful Joseph Drouhin. This is another family-run estate, working with organic and biodynamic techniques, ‘bringing natural answers to natural problems’. We’ll be pouring the Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir 2015 (retail price £59.99) and the Puligny-Montrachet 2016 (retail price £61.99).

Naturally, we’ll finish with something sweet – the Grand Tokaj Aszú 5 Puttonyos 2013 (retail price £32.99)

Remember that the prices quoted above are for retail - so these wines would be much more costly if purchased in a normal restaurant setting!

A set menu will be served, but dietary requirements will be catered for.

With Christmas around the corner we thought you might be interested in a little festive tasting! Joining up with The Jericho Cheese Company and iconic producer Churchill’s Port, The Oxford Wine Company are offering this opportunity to explore a British Cheese and Port tasting in the secret tasting room at The Jerchio Cheese Company’s Shop on Little Clarendon Street.

Adam Verlander, master cheese specialist and owner of The Jericho Cheese Company, has years of experience including six years with Neal’s Yard Dairy and time with a handful of cheesemakers. The shop is filled with specialist farmhouse cheeses from around the British Isles. Everything at Jericho Cheese is attention to detail and dedication to quality, small scale producers. Such delicious cheese and expertise… we couldn’t resist the temptation of opening a few bottles of port!

Joining us for the evening will be Jamie Churchill of the Churchill family. Churchill Port was founded in 1981 by John Graham, but not being able to use his family name (you guessed it Graham’s Port) he named the company after his wife Caroline Churchill. Churchill are in many ways a traditional port house, preferring to use methods such as foot treading the grapes and allowing natural fermentation, despite being the youngest of the port houses.

The evening will comprise of four cheeses paired with a selection of ports chosen by The Oxford Wine Company and Jamie Churchill. Although these rich and complex wines will most definitely warm the soul, we will be in a working cheese shop so please remember to bring something (or someone) warm to snuggle up with.

Following the great success and popularity of last years event we are expecting tickets to sell out quickly and due to limited space please book early to avoid disappointment.
