Wine Lovers Get a Taste of TV Drama

Millions who tune in to the ITV drama Downton Abbey dream of the opulent lifestyle enjoyed by Lord and Lady Grantham. Most will never get close to the world of the Edwardian aristocracy, but The Oxford Wine Company is now offering a taste of the era to customers across the country. It has been granted sole UK distribution rights for Downton Abbey Blanc and Downton Abbey Claret, produced to mark the relaunch of the fifth series. Filming for the next series was under way last week in Bampton, which portrays the fictional North Oxfordshire village of Downton in the drama. Bampton and Clanfield district councillor Martin Barrett said: "Downton has brought a lot of money into the village and is helping the local shops. We see people from far and wide coming to Bampton because of its association with Downton and long may it continue. The launch of a wine can only be good news because it builds the brand and spreads the word about Bampton." The wines are available from The Oxford Wine Company at £12.99 a bottle.

Drinkers Give Vintages the Thumbs Up

The Downton wines scored well in an off-the-cuff taste test in Bampton:

      Downton Abbey Claret

      * Wayne Thomas, 57, of Littleworth: "It's certainly the best drink I've had today, it really is rather pleasant." Score: 9/10

      * Helen Thomas, 47, of Chippenham: "I'm not an expert on wine but I do quite like this. I definitely think I would buy it again, it's easy to drink and very tasty." Score 8/10

      * "I can't pretend to be a wine connoisseur but I like it. It's not acidic and it has a smooth taste and is suitably sweet." Score 8/10

      Downton Abbey Blanc

      * Gemma Anderson, 33, of Bampton: "I don't like it, it's a bit too dry for me. Then again I don't know much wine, so maybe I would like it more after a glass or two, if I got used to the taste." Score 6/10

      * Kerry Pitts, 40, of Bampton: "I like it a lot. I like a dry wine but I don't like bitter wine, which I find can be common with whites." Score 9/10

      * Pam Dowley, 70, of Bampton: "I think it's quite good and I would like to buy it as a present for someone. I can see it being popular at Christmas." Score 8/10

Downton Abbey fans can now clink glasses charged with the real taste of period wines

The head of fine wine at The Oxford Wine Company, Theo Sloot, said the wines were in the style of those enjoyed by the great and good at the start of the 20th Century. "The red is a fruity red in part because of the grapes used in it. Malbec was used prior to the 1950s in Bordeaux and it has been put it to make the wine taste like what was drank in the time of Downton. The white has a very fresh style and is a bit more modern, fresh, zesty and citrusy." Downton Abbey spokesman Dominic Burns said: "We're thrilled to be extending the Downton Abbey brand further with the introduction of two wines which have sold incredibly well in the United States. It's an added bonus that it will be distributed through The Oxford Wine Company, as Oxfordshire has been a key filming location for the series." Both wines cost £12.99 a bottle and are available from The Oxford Wine Company.

Raising a Glass to Return of Wine Café

"The Oxford Wine Company has taken over the building formerly occupied by the Summertown Wine Café in South Parade and will relaunch in April. It will be the first time the Standlake-based wine dealer has opened a licensed premises which will be renamed The Oxford Wine Café. Managing Director Ted Sandbach said: "The Oxford Wine Cafe gives us the perfect opportunity to tap into the discerning North Oxford market and to give all our customers an opportunity to taste quality wines in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere."

Bosses at The Oxford Wine Company, which also has a shop on Oxford's Botley Road, intend to keep many aspects of the old business but say prices will be cheaper with a choice of up to 100 different wines. A refurbishment of the business has now started and the business will be managed by Louise Ferreira, who has been working on the sales side of The Oxford Wine Company but spent eight years running the Blue Boar at Longworth. She said: "We are not going to change too much because the locals really liked it. For example we are using the same coffee supplier. The food is going to be simple and we are talking to local suppliers. We want to build a good atmosphere - the sound of people having a good time is music to my ears."The aim is to attract a wide client base from business people to parents dropping in after the school run. Regular tastings will be held and wine will also be for take home sale. A sommelier, Callum Peaston, who previously worked at The Feathered Nest at Nether Westcote will also be employed, along with up to six other full and part time staff."

Wine Merchant Enjoys Sweet Taste of Success

"A wine merchant is popping open the Champagne after winning a forth award this year. The Oxford Wine Company brought home the Regional Wine Merchant of the Year award for the South of England on Tuesday. The prestigious title joins three others on the trophy shelf, Best Customer Service and Best Wholesaler of the Year from harpers Wine & Spirits, and Independent Wine Retailer of the Year from the Drink Retailing Awards. Theo Sloot said: "We are extremely pleased, it is always an honour to be recognized by your peers. There are a lot of good companies out there, and we won this with a team effort. We have won three awards this year already but this tops it off, this really is the one to get." The company's chief buyer, Marcia Waters, has the highly-sought-after MW (master of wine) qualification."

      Firm Toasts Awards Win

"The Oxford Wine Company, which opened a shop in West Way, Cirencester, this summer, has been named winner of the prestigious Regional Wine Merchant of the Year 2012 by the top wine trade body. Judges of The International Wine Challenge (IWC) include many Masters of Wine and well-known journalists such as Oz Clarke. Charles Metcalfe, Chairman of the IWC, said: 'The fact that The Oxford Wine Company has a great range of wines was shown clearly in this year's International Wine Challenge, where they won 19 Gold medals. That's something very few other companies in the UK managed. They run a great programme of tastings and events, have just opened another shop (in Cirencester), and taken on Marcia Waters, a very respected mater of Wine, to help on the buying side. It's so good to see a well-run company expanding, making decent profits and giving a cracking service to its customers.'"
